Twas down in yonder shady grove
I met my Mary Lou
She'd hair the colour of the corn
And eyes like morning dew
I'd other girls in other towns
But I loved her the best
I loved her like no other
My lily of the west

I asked if she would marry me
And her cheeks they burned bright red
She said that thing could never be
As she was already wed
I cursed her for her wanton ways
And lying from the start
Then I took my silver dagger
And buried it in her heart

And now I'm in the jailhouse
My life is almost done
They'll hang me from the hanging tree
At the rising of the sun
I'd other girls in other towns
But I loved her the best
I loved her like no other
My lily of the west

5. Country Song
(McGowan) Lots of influences here - from Nana Mouskouri's 'Lily of the West' to Joan Baez's 'Silver Dagger'. Well - I made a country song of my own from all those influences. I don't like very much country music - but I think this could pass OK on a 1935 shellac 78 rpm. -- Davy

Yep, I recognized Lily of the West and Silver Dagger from the lyrics - but also the melody was almost familiar in some strange way. Very good country song. You are a country boy, as you have said before. -- Jore
